May 29, 6:30 - 8 PM-New York Public Library (Trustees Rm.-2rd Floor) 5th Ave at 42nd St., Free Admission, 212.741-9110/www.clmp.org for additional information.

NEW YORK, MAY 2002-What does it mean to be a publisher of one race publishing work not of that background? In continuing its "Contents Under Pressure: Debates and Trends in Independent Literary Publishing" series, The Council of Literary Magazines and Presses presents Editor as Other: The Aesthetic of Multiculturalism. Leading editors will discuss the art and politics of cultural diversity in independent magazines and presses, how they provide an indispensable outlet for the voices often left out of the mainstream, and how this writing reaches its audiences. The audience will be invited to participate in the dialogue.

Panelist include:

  • Josh Cohen, Editor-in-Chief of the Boston Review
  • Steve Cannon, Executive Director of A Gathering of the Tribes, home to Tribes Magazine and Fly By Nite Press
  • Danny Shot of Long Shot, which has published many Latino writers
  • Alexandra van der Kamp of Terra Incognita, a bi-lingual magazine of Spanish and English published in both Spain and the US
  • Jacqueline Bishop of Calabash, a journal of Caribbean writing
  • Moderated by Jeffrey Lependorf, CLMP's executive director.

The Council of Literary Magazines and Presses (CLMP) was founded in 1967 to serve independent publishers of exceptional fiction, poetry and prose through a wide variety of technical assistance and advocacy programs. These events are made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, as part of CLMP's New York State Technical Assistance Program [NYTAP], the Wallace-Reader's Digest Funds and are co-sponsored by the Humanities and Social Sciences Library of the New York Public Library.
