Levitate is now open for submissions of poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and visual art!
Levitate aims to be inclusive, both in terms of the authors and the types of work we accept. We want to create a safe and comfortable place for writers of all backgrounds. We recognize that the writing industry has been predominantly white and we aim to lift up the voices of writers of color, as well as other marginalized communities. We recognize that everyone deserves for their voice to be heard, and we believe that it’s important that writers at various stages of their careers are given the opportunity to showcase their work and the perspective it shows. Levitate accepts all genres of fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and visual art, and is also accepting work under the theme “Insomnia” for our Issue 8 themed section.
Insomnia is defined as not sleeping when you should, but it’s more than that. The thoughts that come out at night can be both profound and existential, keeping us awake when no one else is around. At this darkest hour, the moon’s secrets are unveiled and things may no longer be what they seem, almost surreal. Shadows morph in the corners of our eyes, stirring the imagination to run wild with intrigue. We seek out pieces that arise in the dead of night when the stars are at their brightest and the mind is entranced with their beauty.
Fiction should be no longer than 5,000 words. We welcome flash fiction, which we define as anything less than 1,000 words.
Creative Nonfiction should be no longer than 4,000 words.
Poetry submissions should include no more than 3 poems, with no poem longer than 2 pages (no more than 6 pages total).
Visual Artists are encouraged to submit in any medium, including drawings, paintings, photographs, sculpture (any material), ceramics, prints, graphic narratives (one page). Artists can submit up to five pieces. Please submit images as jpeg or tif, 300dpi.
Please do not send novels, novellas, or complete collections. We will not consider previously published work.
