How Did You Arrive At Your Current Position?
I went for a walk around the block while working at an office Downcity, looked up at the Superman Building, and said, "I want an office in there someday." So I launched Downcity Ink, for people who love Rhode Island even when they don't like it.
What Is The Staff Structure At Your Magazine/press?
It's just me. Sometimes I'll get a second opinion on submissions and jokes from friends and family from Rhode Island.
Do You Have Any Cover Letter Advice?
The only thing I care about is that you actually have a relationship with Rhode Island. Just tell me about that.
How Are Submissions Processed In Your Magazine/press?
I read them on tea breaks in between sending emails for my day job and daydreaming about how to make Rhode Island the world's favorite weird little corner of the universe.
What Do You Look For In A Submission?
We look for writing that's fun, lighthearted, unmistakably written by a Rhode Islander, and ideally humorous. If your piece doesn't need to say it's set in RI for readers to know that's exactly where it is, you've done your job well.
What Advice Do You Have For First-time Submitters?
We love inside jokes about RI that will only make sense if you have a strong relationship to the Ocean State. We're on a first-name basis with Buddy, we drink Dels sans straw, we turn left where Benny's used to be. We LOVE the Superman building.
Do You Have A Favorite Unsolicited Submission Discovery Or Anecdote?
A woman who dined at Wright's Farm on her first-ever trip to Rhode Island wrote an essay about the incomprehensibility of this place's wild success. It is, so far, the best thing we've ever read.
Who Is Your Ideal Reader?
If you've ever spewed fun facts about Rhode Island that have nothing to do with the size of the state, you'll like Downcity Ink. We're by Rhode Islanders, for Rhode Islanders, about Rhode Island. Low-number license plates not required for entry.
