Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
Grande Dame Literary Journal is a an online journal for well-written short stories and story-style memoir. We support women writers and believe that all women are Grande Dames in their own right. We seek to encourage women to write stories and share their memoirs by tapping their inner Grande Dame. Age is irrelevant. The blog is committed to maintaining an environment that is about the writer, not the journal. Writers can choose if they would like a little feedback on a decline. And they are encouraged to submit the same story after changes are made. They are permitted to resubmit three times. Third time's a charm, sometimes. WOMEN WRITERS VIBRANT VOICES is our motto.

How Did You Arrive At Your Current Position?
Through a career focused on writing and editing. Strong belief in encouraging women writers to reach their potential. Too many good writers are dismissed before they get a chance.
What Is The Staff Structure At Your Magazine/press?
Editors evaluate material. Accept and post, or reject and offer suggestions to better the writing. Work may be resubmitted twice.
Do You Have Any Cover Letter Advice?
Be short and to the point. Tell the recipient only what they need to know. Nix verbosity.
How Are Submissions Processed In Your Magazine/press?
Each piece is read for clarity of thought, fruition of storyline, and character arc. Grammar and typos are addressed. Minor ones are fixed; extensive ones revert to the author. Rejection is explained. Encourage revised work for writers to resubmit.
What Do You Look For In A Submission?
A well-written, clearly thought out story or story-style memoir.
What Advice Do You Have For First-time Submitters?
Make sure someone other than you has read your work. As writer's we miss our own mistakes. And as editors, we know when a piece is raw. Work with a writer's group or critique group.
Do You Have A Favorite Unsolicited Submission Discovery Or Anecdote?
We offer writer's the option of knowing why work is declined. One author loved our decline note so much that she wrote back thanking us for the most charming decline she had ever received. It's now a testimonial on our blog.
Who Is Your Ideal Reader?
Someone who enjoys short stories and memoirs that sound like stories.
