Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
We are a journal preoccupied with history- cultural, political, geographical, personal, and how each interacts with the other to mold our experience. Adolescent blunders, dental records, the archaic origins of long-held or long-lost traditions— we want to know all of it. We are looking for work that spills secrets and wipes the dust off of old memories. We want honesty. We want an education.

Submissions Policy
We only print previously unpublished works. For our purposes, personal blogs and/or social media posts do not count as previous publication; however, we do ask that you take down anything you plan to submit to us for consideration. We may also consider reprinting work that previously appeared in defunct journals/presses, however, please tell us where the piece was published and when. At this moment in time, we do not print translations. Please include a brief cover letter as well as a short (50 words or fewer) third-person biography when sending your submission. Simultaneous submissions are encouraged, but please let us know in your cover letter and notify us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere. Please only submit to one category, once per reading period. You may submit up to 5 poems, 5 artworks, or 4000 words for nonfiction. For full submission guidelines, please visit our website.

What Is The Staff Structure At Your Magazine/press?
It's me, the assistant editor, the art editor, and some trusted readers. It's a truly collaborative effort, though I do have the final word on what will ultimately make it into an issue if there's no clear consensus.
Do You Have Any Cover Letter Advice?
Short and simple is best. Honestly, the work is the most important thing. Cordial, a dash of personality, and keep the emphasis on the work.
What Do You Look For In A Submission?
Honesty, foremost. We say in our mission statement that we want an education, and we do. We want to feel people's histories, feel where they come from and how they got here. We want to feel like we walked down that road, too.
What Advice Do You Have For First-time Submitters?
Your work will speak for itself. Be brave, send your best. And make sure your submission is tailored to the magazine. If we read something great, but it truly has nothing to do with our editorial focus, we won't be able to accept it.
Who Is Your Ideal Reader?
Everyone, truly. We want all readers to come and see their stories reflected in Kitchen Table Quarterly, and we want them to find connection and kinship through reading the work of other writers, as well.
