Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
Superlative, The Short Story Literary Journal, was founded by Ross Turner in 2020. It is edited by Ross Turner, Gemma Mainwaring and Rachel Wollaston, and illustrated by Orlaith Stratford. We publish quality work by aspiring short story writers, in order to promote new, developing authors and the art of the short story to readers worldwide. We are delighted with every piece we publish, but our main aim is to nurture emerging talent and newly-established writers, to keep writing alive for future generations. Our print journal is published annually, available each year from November.

Submissions Policy
We accept submissions via Submittable, and ask that submissions are previously unpublished and edited and formatted correctly in standard British English. Each year there is a theme to give submissions for that issue a little direction. We accept: - short stories (for the journal, free entry, £10 prize for selected submissions; or for the short story competition, £7.50 entry, £150 prize money for the winner) [500-1,500 words for journal pieces] [500-5,000 words for competition pieces] - flash fiction (for the flash fiction competition, £2.50 entry, £50 prize money for the winner) [50-500 words] - mini sagas (for the mini saga competition, free entry, £10 prize money) [50 words] - feature pieces (free entry, £25 prize money for the selected piece) [50-5,000 words] Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but we ask writers to please let us know if their work is accepted elsewhere. We encourage transgressive and experimental work, especially for feature pieces. We accept extracts from longer pieces of work, provided they still meet the submission criteria and stand as a comprehensible piece of writing in their own right. Ultimately, our editors' decision is final. We also nominate (where applicable) our contributors for the Pen America Short Story Prize for Emerging Writers. And, finally, our judging process is completely anonymous.
