Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
Synonym Magazine is a print and on-line magazine that focuses on the global immigrant diaspora and third culture through a food and art lens. We are a completely independent, self-funded magazine and could use your support. Our editorial board are volunteer-based and all of our profits go right back into making the magazine. Our goal is to become sustainable and better serve our community! Our community is that of the global immigrant diaspora and third culture population through shared stories, shared food items, shared forms of caring for families through the practices of cooking and food. We amplify and seek out stories that mainly go unheard but in telling these stories we are acknowledging these experiences and creating a space for them.We vigorously seek out and commission BIPOC writers and contributors, which give accessibility to both our audience and the subjects we’re telling the stories about. Our subjects find a sense of community to have their story and vision told by the people that look like them, there’s an inherent trust. In addition, our team is 80% made up of a BIPOC staff. This idea is to show that not only is a magazine like this possible but that people actually are seeking something like this out. These stories and this magazine is so important right now because as politics and the world become more and more divided, we’re looking to share stories where the minority’s (or global majority’s) voice is being heard. The diaspora is growing and there isn’t a platform for that, we are trying to fill that gap.
