Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
Tempered Runes Press is an independent publisher of poetry, prose, fiction, and visual art that is meticulously well-crafted. We believe that letters and images have power and that great stories are forged from passion and integrity. We publish compositions from writers and artists who work as blacksmiths, crafting their pieces with powerful blows and finesse. Our goal is to bring all types of creative writing and art to our readers. We want to show the value of both traditional and experimental works of poetry, prose, fiction, and visual art. To us, the greatest pieces are both beautiful and functional.

Submissions Policy
First and foremost, we are an inclusive journal. All are welcome to submit their work as long as it follows our guidelines. We accept submissions of poetry, fiction, mini sagas, and visual art in any genre. Our only requirement is that work does not instigate violence or encourage discrimination on the basis of race, sex, gender identity, ethnic background, age, education, religion, or health. We also limit submissions to writers and artists above the age of 18 OR 16 years or older with parental permission. Secondly, our press believes that EVERY artist should be paid for their work. We will pay for all of the work we accept for publication, whether it is for our journal or our website. We believe that this is the most ethical way to run our business when we charge a submission fee. Finally, we want to maintain a community of great writers and artists. As our press continues to grow, there will be more opportunities for individual creators to showcase their work and build their portfolio.

How Did You Arrive At Your Current Position?
I started this press as a passion project in November 2019. I have been a creative non-fiction writer for more than 5 years and I wanted to provide an outlet for other creatives to showcase their best work.
What Is The Staff Structure At Your Magazine/press?
We currently have two Editors-in-Chief and one Contributing Editor. The other two editors are responsible for first-round blind reviews, while my job is to screen the pieces that make it through the first round.
Do You Have Any Cover Letter Advice?
Be yourself! We appreciate those who aren't afraid to be kind, thought-provoking, or funny. However, there's no need to overdo it. Ultimately, we want cover letters that are genuine.
How Are Submissions Processed In Your Magazine/press?
Once we receive a submission, it enters first-round blind review. During this round, the editors cannot see each other's scores. If a submission receives a score of 2, it moves on to me for a final review.
What Do You Look For In A Submission?
We want submissions that show a mastery of technique and an identifiable theme. We aren't too picky on the genre, but we actively look for submissions that create in-depth discussion among our editors. Good stories, poems, and art have meaning.
What Advice Do You Have For First-time Submitters?
Don't be discouraged if you receive a rejection. We actively encourage submitters to edit their work and resubmit again, especially if their work just needs a few edits. Our editors provide feedback to submissions that make it to the final round.
