Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
Language operates as a commons, fecund and abundant, which all come to for the sake of ordering their lives and the world around them. Each writer’s personal language and approach is the product of this commons’ resources put to unique use. Language is the Eden-soil from which the world itself springs, the immaculate waters drawn up from the well of creation. A Common Well Journal is focused on finding, publishing, and building editorial relationships with writers who are stewards to the powers of language. We are interested primarily in works that draw from this fount of meaning, find the personal application of these resources, and render forth something which expands the very bounds of universality itself. The goal is not to share one’s truth, but instead to illuminate the Truth as seen from one’s specific vantage. Edited by K Hank Jost, produced in partnership with Whisk(e)y Tit Books, a Common Well publishes print editions every quarter, starting in the fall of 2023.

Do You Have Any Cover Letter Advice?
No cover letter necessary, just give us a clean copy of the work.
What Do You Look For In A Submission?
We are looking for writing that could only be written by the writer who wrote it. This means, first and foremost, that we are looking stylistically strong, voice driven work. Unique approaches and honest craft are our bread and butter.
What Advice Do You Have For First-time Submitters?
Follow the formatting requirements and make sure the opening line is worth reading.
Do You Have A Favorite Unsolicited Submission Discovery Or Anecdote?
It's always a pleasure when a good poem or story comes through that's written by someone outside of the standard institutions. It happens more often than one would think. It is a deep pleasure of mine to provide a space for this work to be read.
Who Is Your Ideal Reader?
One who likes to read, who enjoys the silence, and who is ready to meet the writer where they're coming from.
