How Did You Arrive At Your Current Position?
Founded the organization with a small group of writers and artists in 1992.
What Is The Staff Structure At Your Magazine/press?
African Voices has five editors who run the magazine and a Board of Directors who oversee our business operations. The organization has an extended family of volunteers responsible for managing our arts initiatives and community outreach.
Do You Have Any Cover Letter Advice?
Please send a brief cover letter with your submissions introducing your experience and career goals as a writer. Let us know why you believe African Voices magazine is a right fit for you as an author.
How Are Submissions Processed In Your Magazine/press?
Each editor reviews and selects work for publication based on the quality of your writing. We rarely impose or force themes — we want writers to submit their best work.
What Do You Look For In A Submission?
Did the writer tell a story in a compelling or fresh point of view? How will this poem or short story resonate with our readers? We look at the lasting impression presented on the page and how it impacts our readers once they finish each issue.
What Advice Do You Have For First-time Submitters?
Submit your strongest work. Please do not submit pieces longer than what we accept in our guidelines. Do not send us unpublished book manuscripts. We appreciate experimental writing — work that challenges the narrative tradition is welcomed.
Do You Have A Favorite Unsolicited Submission Discovery Or Anecdote?
"The ability of writers to imagine what is not the self, to familiarize the strange and mystify the familiar, is the test of their power." — Toni Morrison. Challenge our readers with your art.
Who Is Your Ideal Reader?
You.
