Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
[Alternate Route] strives to provide a voice for the often neglected in society, for those of us who do not fit in to the mainstream. As the name goes, there's always another road to travel, another route, and we hope to provide it for writers out there. We are an indie beatnik artsy-fartsy lovey-dovey literary magazine published quarterly online only. Please see our Patreon at .

Please send no more than 5 pieces to [email protected] We request first publication rights to the work and all rights revert to the artist/author thereafter. We are flexible and if you really want more published, send it over and we'll take a look and see. Please send fewer if the pieces are longer (short stories, e.g.). We can publish previously published work with a note to indicate credit to original publication source if you're into that.

How Did You Arrive At Your Current Position?
If you build it, they will come.
What Is The Staff Structure At Your Magazine/press?
I am a one-man bulldozer.
Do You Have Any Cover Letter Advice?
We're not too stringent so feel free to be a little loose or relaxed, if you will, with your cover letter. Having said that, professionalism IS much appreciated.
How Are Submissions Processed In Your Magazine/press?
Editor reads/looks at submissions, sees if they're a good fit with artistic merit, and then adds the ones that are. We aren't too picky about theme or "fitting in" haha, that would be counterproductive to our cause.
What Do You Look For In A Submission?
Artistic merit. It's an abstract concept so I recommend reading elsewhere in professional essays or books about it if you want!
What Advice Do You Have For First-time Submitters?
Don't be nervous! DO edit the bahoola out of your work. If you don't, it shows.
Do You Have A Favorite Unsolicited Submission Discovery Or Anecdote?
One of our published authors is a strong advocate for advertising our journal in the informal sense, which is awesome. We're also hugely flattered whenever authors seem truly engaged with their submission. We're honored that you're honored.
Who Is Your Ideal Reader?
Hipster beatnik black mascara purple clip-on wig steel-toe zip-tie knee-high leather boots short skirt long jacket.
