Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
Austur (oosh-ter), meaning East in Icelandic, is an online literary magazine based in Northern Utah. Twice a year, we produce inspirational literary fiction and nonfiction from emerging and established artisans in the forms of short stories, essays, poetry, memoirs, translations, and art. Founded in October 2022, our mission is to promote diverse voices from different cultures and backgrounds from all over the world — to celebrate how each individual honors God, family, nature, and self-growth within our themed issues. We seek work that stirs the soul in remembrance of things that matter most, urges us to pause and reflect, and invites us to empathize and improve. Every fall, Austur nominates one poem, essay, and short story for the Pushcart Prize along with interviewing those individuals for a special feature in our spring issue. They will also receive a complimentary print copy of the issue their work appeared in regardless of winning the prize or not.

Do You Have Any Cover Letter Advice?
Answer the question being asked, as it saves us loads of time from chasing after the writers we accept. Plus, it allows us to feel something more for your work, because we can see why your work is such a great fit for the magazine.
What Do You Look For In A Submission?
Read our first issue (available via free digital download on our website) and/or our interview found at www.austurmagazine.com/publisher-insights.
What Advice Do You Have For First-time Submitters?
Double check everything. What we stand for, our guidelines, and of course, your information included on the submission form.
Do You Have A Favorite Unsolicited Submission Discovery Or Anecdote?
It's not quite a submission discovery and more of a failure of when we first started out as a magazine. It's a comical read and can be found here: www.austurmagazine.com/austanatt/lostmarbles.
Who Is Your Ideal Reader?
Our readers want work that's thought-provoking, inspirational, and centered around God, family, nature, and self-growth -- something that's in harmony with their core values and beliefs.
