Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
Founded in 2002, Bayou Magazine is a biannual, national literary magazine published by The University of New Orleans. We run two annual contests, the Kay Murphy Prize for Poetry and the James Knudsen Prize for Fiction. We publish poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and the winner of the annual Tennessee Williams One-Act Play Contest. Bayou‘s mission is to publish exceptional, exciting work by both established and emerging writers. Bayou is proud to have featured work from such writers as Marcia Aldrich, Jacob M. Appel, Mark Doty, Marilyn Hacker, Timothy Liu, D.A. Powell, Eric Trethewey, Tom Whalen, and Christy Wise. Writing that first appeared in Bayou has been short-listed for the Pushcart Prize and named in the notable essays list in Best American Essays.
