Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
New American Press is an independent literary publisher committed to bringing readers the best in contemporary fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and translations from across the United States and around the world. We believe that books have the potential to offer readers new and compelling visions of the world, and we’re committed to bringing those visions to life with careful attention to each book’s design, production, and distribution. Annually, we award a New American Fiction Prize and a New American Poetry Prize, each for a full-length book that we publish and tell all our friends about. We also seek to support and spotlight the flourishing crop of Midwestern writers who consistently produce work that is innovative, engaging, finely crafted, and strong in voice. To that end, New American Press releases a new anthology of Midwestern writing each year: New Stories from the Midwest on even years, and New Poetry from the Midwest on odd years. Our affiliated literary journal, MAYDAY Magazine, presents new writing, commentary, and visual art to a growing community of international readers.
