Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
Shift is a student-run journal published by the Ringling College of Art and Design. We welcome new, emerging, and established writers to submit fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, graphic texts, or other text-based work in English or in translation. We want to see your best work, regardless of style, form, subject matter, or genre. We’re especially interested in literary oddities–language-based creations that push boundaries, challenge expectations, and defy easy categorization.

Do You Have Any Cover Letter Advice?
We consider the work first and then look at cover letters. We're interested in publishing a diverse group of writers, so please do let us know relevant background, previous publications, and any writing communities you might belong to.
What Do You Look For In A Submission?
We are looking for fresh, authentic work that uses language with care, and we're interested when writers push boundaries. That said, a great story in prose or poetry always grabs our attention. Great stories make us feel something.
What Advice Do You Have For First-time Submitters?
Give us your best work. We are very democratic in our reading process.
Do You Have A Favorite Unsolicited Submission Discovery Or Anecdote?
We found an essay in our "Other" pile, a delightful first-person essay about a Cuban child during the Bay of Pigs invasion. We accepted it--and were thrilled to hear it's going to be part of memoir published by a university press.
Who Is Your Ideal Reader?
Anyone who believe stories matter.
