Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
Spark Central is a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to igniting creativity so that people of all economic backgrounds can create the future they imagine. We offer neighborhood youth creative, project-based programs that publish youth voice—especially youth whose voices are not often sought out or are marginalized. We do this via books, publications, graphic art, music, code, and more. Every youth that participates in these programs will grow in confidence, cultivate a growth mindset, and develop their future aspirations (see our program outcomes below). Spark Central is launching its first teen-run arts and literary journal in 2023, called Ignite, which will be open for submissions this fall.

Submissions Policy
SUBMISSIONS ARE NOW OPEN THROUGH JANUARY 1, 2023 This is an open call for submissions of poetry, prose, photography, and visual art by high school students currently residing in Spokane County, Washington. Chosen submissions will be featured in the first issue of Spark Central's teenage art and literary journal, Ignite. Theme: We’re looking for poetry, writing, or visual art which responds to the question: If you could choose your impact on the world, what would it look like? This includes art or writing with themes or subject matter interpreting impact, passion, personal missions, or journeys. If you're between grades 9th-12th and currently living in Spokane (this includes Spokane Valley and all of Spokane County), you may submit: - poetry of all types - writing preferably under 5,000 words (prose, short stories, creative nonfiction, paragraphs, and prose poems) - photography (digital and scanned film) - visual art (digitally submitted paintings, drawings, mixed media, photographs of sculpture, and graphic design) You may submit as many pieces as you’d like. You will have to go through the submission process each time for each piece, so please copy/paste your bio and information. Please note: We will not consider submissions with content matter which includes hate speech, gratuitous violence, or explicit obscenity. Submissions should be on-theme (although there is some wiggle room). Your work will be evaluated by your peers, a team of high school-age artists, and writers. It is not guaranteed that any or all of your work will be accepted, but you will retain all rights to your work if published. Email [email protected] if you have any questions about any part of the process.
