Sunday Mornings at the River is an indie poetry press founded by Rebecca Rijsdijk in 2012. It is run by poets for poets. Our aim is to create a healthy literary community in which we ourselves feel like we would be able to thrive. We believe a poet’s job is much like what Salman Rushdie wrote in his novel The Satanic Verses: a poet’s work is to name the unnamable, to point at frauds, to take sides, start arguments, shape the world and stop it from going to sleep. This is the kind of poetry we are looking for and publish. Equality and inclusivity are the magical words at our headquarters (which is an old wooden dining table with too many coffee rings on it). We believe the traditional publishing businesses hold way too much power. The only power we believe in is people power. We believe that everyone has the right to be heard, especially the people that are pushed into the shadows by the traditional publishing world. We try to amplify their voices by providing a platform and building a community, both online and offline. We pride ourselves on being an independent publisher. We will never charge submission fees and will stay dedicated to knocking down doors and emancipating makers to publish their own poetry books without the need for a big bag of money. We are also dead serious about keeping all the rights with the makers and see ourselves as that one person we ourselves needed when we started discovering our creative nature in rural towns and far away kingdoms. None of us is in this alone.
