Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
The Fabulist has published short fiction, poetry and art, in digital and print editions, since 2007. We began publishing nonfiction in 2019, including online reviews, previews and pop-cultural news blogging. Our interests include, but are not limited to, science fiction, fantasy, myth, folk traditions, comics, magic realism, “literary fiction,” pop culture, film, music, and more. What We Stand For Art saves lives and changes the world. We celebrate the escapism of fantastical fiction and art — but we yearn for the perspective-altering insights into our shared human condition that great works of the imagination can inspire and provoke. We love speculative fiction — including science fiction, fantasy, weird tales, horror, magic realism, “literary fabulism,” folklore and myth — but we also delight in the subversion and destruction of staid and stuffy genre drudgery. Our nonfiction offerings include reviews, interviews, essays, and commentary. We’re interested in books, music, comics, movies, TV — and also the overlap between the fantastical imagination and the real world of politics, policy, and our other, all-too-human passions. The Fabulist supports creative and critical works that, through insight, provocation, escapism and imagination, advance human community and a shared, sustainable, just, peaceful and diverse world. It should go without saying that we are deeply opposed to all forms of racism, bigotry, sexism, genderism, transphobia, homophobia, intolerance, oppression, censorship, supremacism, and so on, and so on, and so on …
