Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
Since 1956, Westerly has been publishing lively fiction and poetry as well as intelligent articles. The Magazine has always sought to provide a Western Australian-based voice, although its contributors and subject matter have never been geographically exclusive. It publishes works of literature from across the world, offering a space for Western Australian writers to enter into a broader global discourse, and vice versa, bringing international writers into conversation with Western Australian readers. Westerly exists to support and promote literature and creative writing. We have a commitment to publishing minimum 5% First-Nations authored material in every issue, overseen by our Editor for First Nations Writing. The Magazine has been instrumental in the careers of many of the region's most prominent and internationally-renowned writers. It is published at the Westerly Centre at the University of Western Australia, with assistance from the Western Australian State Government and the Australian Federal Government through the Australia Council for the Arts. Our Writers’ Development Program and Mid-Career Fellowship is supported by the Copyright Agency’s Cultural Fund. Westerly is published in print twice a year in July and November, while the website publishes content throughout the year, including Online Special Issues available for free digital download.
