Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
Winning Writers finds and creates quality resources for poets and writers. It was founded by Jendi Reiter and Adam Cohen in 2001. We sponsor four annual contests: the Wergle Flomp Humor Poetry Contest (no fee), the North Street Book Prize for self-published books, the Tom Howard/John H. Reid Fiction & Essay Contest, and the Tom Howard/Margaret Reid Poetry Contest. We strive to make our contests as writer-friendly as possible, with reasonable fees, large prizes, generous copyright terms, superior customer service (including a toll-free number), and simple, clear, transparent procedures. We publish a free monthly newsletter (circulation: 50,000+) to promote winning entries, link to resources, and call attention to literary opportunities offered by others. From its earliest days, Winning Writers has served to advance the interests of emerging writers - warning against scams, identifying useful resources, and highlighting excellent contemporary work. It offers free online access to profiles of 200+ high-quality literary contests that are free to enter. Winning Writers seeks to be a welcoming place for diverse authors and stories, with a culture of listening to people of all genders, backgrounds, and abilities. We look for fine original writing that portrays under-represented perspectives with sensitivity, accuracy, and passion.
