Big Sea Books

Type Of Organization
Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
Big Sea Books is dedicated to including writers who aren’t normally given a seat at the table in mainstream publishing. We seek writers from communities and cultures all across America who bring their unique voices to readers and the world of literature. We are seeking fiction, including novels in verse, written for adult and young adult audiences as well as memoir, narrative nonfiction, and narratives in verse, stories that, as Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop said, create mirrors, windows and sliding glass doors so that people can see their experiences reflected and gain views into experiences beyond their own. During our 2022 call for submissions, we are not accepting poetry collections, middle grade fiction and nonfiction, or books for children. Our 2023 children’s list is full. If you'd like to be notified about future calls for submissions, sign up here:

Submissions Policy
We accept unpublished novel-length fiction for adults and young adults as well as narrative nonfiction, memoir, and narratives in verse. We will open submissions in summer 2022. We are open to works in English by writers based in the U.S. or with unrestricted right to work for any U.S. employer. Writers must be at least 18 years of age. We reserve the right to determine eligibility of any project submitted. Writers must agree to our Terms and Conditions. We accept unsolicited submissions directly from writers so that we don’t rely on industry gatekeepers. Writers will submit their pitch, bios, and the first chapters of their manuscripts using Submittable. There are no fees to submit to Big Sea Books. Pages should be numbered and double spaced. Include a single cover page with the title of your manuscript, author's name, pen name (if applicable), mailing address, email address, and pronouns. Simultaneous submissions are allowed. Notify Big Sea Books promptly if the manuscript is accepted elsewhere. An automatic notification through Submittable will confirm we have received your submission. We cannot offer personalized confirmation due to the number of submissions. Our team will evaluate submissions based on the strength of the writing, premise and alignment with our mission.
