A polite introduction is sufficient. It's kinda nifty to know where in the world the submission comes from, but it doesn't matter who the submitter is married to, or the name of their dog or children. Limit previous publications to 5.
What Do You Look For In A Submission?
It's important to submit your best work. Don't send something half-baked and expect it to stick. Share it with writing peers who can offer quality input.
What Advice Do You Have For First-time Submitters?
Be alive! Bring work that is full and rich whether it's a ten word story or a poem. Make it work, don't limp along.The ideal submission is a finished piece of work. Haughtiness is a turn-off as is pointlessly erotic or self-pitying work.
Do You Have A Favorite Unsolicited Submission Discovery Or Anecdote?
I've been surprised a few times by submissions from Pulitzer prize nominated authors and a few authors who have written well-known movie scripts. I'm always surprised when Hollywood folks are Tweeting Dime Show Review!
