Gunpowder Press was founded in 2014 by David Starkey, a Santa Barbara poet laureate. Gunpowder Poetry became a literary 501(c)(3) in 2024, focusing on publishing and literary events. The press publishes several annual prizes, including the nationally-recognized Barry Spacks Poetry Prize, the John Ridland Poetry Prize, the Dryden-Vreeland Book Prize, and the bilingual Alta California Chapbook Series. Gunpowder Poetry also oversees the online Anacapa Review, a bimonthly online publication. The California Poets Series recently published Lee Herrick, California's Poet Laureate.
