Submissions Policy
Submissions are managed with Submittable, and we focus on finding (mostly) finished manuscripts of collections of poetry, short fiction, and essays. We offer two open submission periods each year: Fall and Spring. We do not publish light verse or inspirational musings. Work that advances hate speech or discrimination in any way, in any form, is dismissed as garbage. Poetry collection submissions ideally include 50-60 poems; long-form poems are welcomed. Short Fiction collection submissions ideally include between 12 and 15 stories, and total between 30,000 and 50,000 words. We do not publish short-short fiction or novellas at present. Essay collection submissions ideally include between 15 and 20 essays, and total between 60,000 and 75,000 words. We do not publish academic research papers as part of essay collections. All submissions receive a response, if even just an update, within 90 days. Simultaneous submissions are accepted.

How Did You Arrive At Your Current Position?
My literary life began in the 1990s, when I spent 7+ years of graduate study in American literature under the generous mentorship of William H. Gass. It continues through today with the wise counsel of Peter Campion and D. A. Powell as my guides.
What Is The Staff Structure At Your Magazine/press?
We have a publisher and EIC; an executive editor; an editorial assistant; two book designers; one merchandise designer; and one bookseller and events liaison. Total of 7 people working in a highly collaborative and flat organization.
Do You Have Any Cover Letter Advice?
Please provide a concise overview of the work being submitted and some sense of a broader literary area of interest. We care as much about what you read and who you admire as we do about what you write and where you want your literary life to go.
How Are Submissions Processed In Your Magazine/press?
Submissions are processed solely through Submittable. We have a clear workflow of first readings; second readings; in-person editorial review sessions; and final editorial decisions. In some cases we work with authors to develop and resubmit work.
What Do You Look For In A Submission?
Mastery of craft; emotional and intellectual engagement; transparent writing; fearlessness on the page. Quality literary work always stands on its own merits. That drives our decisions.
What Advice Do You Have For First-time Submitters?
Have courage, bring your very best, be open to critical feedback and collaboration, and keep writing. We are writers, too, and know how hard this is. You are guaranteed a focused, serious review from us.
Who Is Your Ideal Reader?
Readers with a literary mind who appreciate thoughtfully challenging work and bring a curiosity for what is possible on the page.
