Nonprofit publishers might be underestimating the value of individual giving for their operation. Maybe you run an end-of-year appeal when the budget gets tight, push a contest or a subscription drive once a year, or apply for a few grants you’re eligible for. But if revenue diversification and true sustainability still feel out of reach, individual giving might be the flexible revenue you need to build capacity and truly grow.
Led by Kelly McLaughlin of From Scratch Fundraising, this session introduces the basics of individual giving for small publishers. We’ll look at where nonprofit revenue comes from and how donors can help build a more sustainable operation for your organization. You’ll learn a simple framework for finding people who already care about your work, and a five-step system that fits the capacity you actually have so you can start building your individual giving program tomorrow.
The session will be most useful for executive directors, board members, and other staff at small and mid-sized presses and lit mags, especially teams of one to five people with no dedicated fundraiser.
What attendees will learn:
- Where nonprofit revenue comes from, and why a diversified mix protects your mission.
- How to define your “why” and your ideal donor, using the Donor ABCs
- How to brainstorm a first donor list from readers, contributors, subscribers, and event audiences
- How to build a repeatable fundraising cycle you can run with a small team
