The fifth anthology of The Rebis will focus on The Moon (XVIII) tarot archetype, and we are open for submissions from January 18-February 17 at 12pm PT. As with previous issues, the work should be deeply intimate. We are looking for original writing, artwork, and any other form of creative expression that you dream up inspired by the 18th card of the Major Arcana. Send us work that is subversive, provocative, erotic, and deliciously alive.
For this issue, we do not want to rehearse familiar themes. We want to encounter The Moon as an initiatory field, as a threshold state where current ways of knowing fall apart and something stranger begins to speak.
Our core thematic interests center on liminality and relational consciousness. This includes nonlinear time, ancestry, grief, and ways of living that resist Western logics of coherence. We are drawn to borderlands, intersections between human and nonhuman, domestic and wild, self and other. Propose stories of tidal intelligence, of submersion, flood states, brackish zones, amniotic memory. Explore different lunar states beyond full and new moons (progressed lunations! eclipses!). Scry us into subcultural spaces and underground worlds, sites of initiation and collective (un)becoming. Ground your work in decolonial, Black, feminist, and mythic frameworks. Get inspired by David Abram, Bayo Akomolafe, Octavia Butler, Gloria Anzaldúa, Edouard Glissant, Hélène Cixous, Clarissa Pinkola Estés, Robin Wall Kimmerer, Toni Morrison, Rebecca Solnit, Christina Sharpe, Simone Weil, and Francis Weller. The ideas shared here are simply thought-starters. We encourage you to take an imaginative, deconstructionist lens. We are looking for diversity and originality in both creative techniques, artistic formats, and concepts explored.
We are especially interested in publishing experimental and genre-bending work (creative non-fiction, short stories, or flash fiction). Longer fiction, personal memoirs, researched articles, interviews, and poetry are all welcome, too.
- Poetry submissions: Please submit no more than 3 poems for consideration. Please put each poem on a separate page in a single document and upload the document.
- Fiction submissions: Please submit at least the first 500 words (or an excerpt of that size). You can also submit the full draft. Fiction pieces should be no longer than 2,000 words. We accept flash fiction! If you have a proposal for something longer, please let us know in the cover letter/note for your submission below.
- Non-fiction submissions: Please submit either a first draft, or an outline with a 500-word excerpt. The excerpt can be the opening paragraphs or a developed idea from another section—please specify in your submission. Non-fiction should be no longer than 2,000 words. If you have a proposal for something longer, please let us know in the cover letter/note for your submission below. Typically, non-fiction runs 800-1200 words.
Please submit previously unpublished work. By “unpublished” we mean that it hasn’t appeared in any print or digital publications beyond your own social channels or website.
We do not accept AI-generated submissions.
This is a paid opportunity. Please forward this to anyone you think might be interested in contributing. New voices and underrepresented writers and artists are encouraged to get in touch.
