Call For Submissions

New Door Books is pleased to announce an exciting new series devoted to walking as a central theme: WalkAbout Books.

As often happens on walks, the idea for the series arrived serendipitously. After New Door’s successful 2022 anthology Ways of Walking, Janice Deal submitted her novel The Blue Door, the story of a guilt-ridden and grieving mother’s ordinary, yet epic walk in search of peace of mind, reconciliation, and a lost dog. A series was born!

WalkAbout series editor Ann de Forest says:

With Thoreau as a guiding spirit, the WalkAbout Books series champions literature, both fiction and nonfiction, that expresses walking’s inherent openness and deliberateness, books in which moving at a human pace fosters close witness and heightened attention to the environment, the people around us, and the urgencies of our time. For me, the name itself, WalkAbout, functions as a trailhead, leading to a variety of paths. The first is clear and direct—these are books about walking. But walking about also implies a freewheeling ramble, open to surprise and serendipity.

New Door Books is actively seeking book-length manuscripts, fiction or nonfiction, that honor walking as a means of navigating the world, externally and internally. These will be books that feature journeys on foot of any and all kinds, from the simple, everyday stroll to the epic, fantastical expedition.
