Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
53rd State Press publishes lucid, challenging, and lively new writing for performance. Our catalog includes new plays as well as scores and notations for interdisciplinary performance, graphic adaptations, and essays on theater and dance. 53rd State aims to make new performance more widely accessible and to promote an experiential context for dramatic writing that extends beyond the live event.

Submissions Policy
53rd State does not accept unsolicited submissions as we are a tiny collective of volunteers. The editors reach out to writers and artists of interest to solicit play submissions, reading multiple plays by solicited authors whenever possible. We regularly seek out recommendations for new writers from writers we have published and whose work we admire as a means of diversifying our tastes and encountering new talents.
