Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
Beloit Poetry Journal, founded in 1950, publishes two issues and a chapbook each year and awards the Adrienne Rich Award for Poetry. Our longstanding mission is to seek out and share work of fresh and lasting power, poems that speak strartling, complicated, necessary truths and that do so in surprising and beautiful ways.

We accept submissions of unpublished poems and translations during seasonal open reading periods, and we read for the Adrienne Rich Award for Poetry during the months of February, March, and April. We also accept submissions for the Chad Walsh Chapbook Series during the months of October and November. We are open to a wide range of forms and styles in contemporary poetry. We are always watching for new poets, quickened language, and work that offers a fresh purchase on the political or social landscape. We are now willing to consider simultaneous submissions, but (given the time- and labor-intensive nature of our editorial process) we ask that you notify us immediately if a poem is accepted elsewhere. Limit your submission to five poems OR a single long poem. (Yes, we enjoy long poems!) The BPJ retains first American serial rights. Copyright reverts to the author upon publication.
