Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
Black Oak Society is an emerging independent publishing imprint which focuses on magazines and short-form books that celebrate the rich history and culture of North Carolina's Black community. Originating as an artists' collective in 2019, the mission statement of our flagship publication BOS Magazine is "Give Black Raleigh her flowers now." Each issue of the semi-annual literary magazine is themed, yet we encourage contributing creatives to interpret it broadly. We believe that telling the story of Black Raleigh/Black North Carolina through the artistry of her elders and descendants is a powerful statement regarding the deep well of wisdom, power, and beauty within our stories.
