Blue Unicorn looks for poetry that would be hard to mistake for prose: poems in which the language is clearly heightened over normal speech. The heightening can take the shape of rhyme and meter, but we look for no less effort in "free" verse. We’re alert for the original metaphorical image that may take a moment to prove itself just right; the unexpected word that says more than the familiar one; the sharply observed detail that brings a thing alive. We do not tolerate clichés.
