Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
Founded in 2005 with the mission of putting literature and art on the streets, Broadsided publishes monthly visual-literary collaborations as free posters for anyone to download and print. Special features punctuate the monthly publications. Writing is chosen from open submissions. Art is created by a pool of artists invited to the project who “dibs” selected writing and create visual responses. Distribution is managed by you, the grass-roots “Vectors” who print the letter-sized pdfs and post them in your neighborhoods.

How Did You Arrive At Your Current Position?
I founded Broadsided in 2005 and continue to run the publication.
What Is The Staff Structure At Your Magazine/press?
We have a reading team of 4 (3 permanent and one guest editor), who meet to decide upon open submissions of writing. An Art Editor guides artist participation. We have editors for special sections: Reviews, Teaching, Translation, Communication.
Do You Have Any Cover Letter Advice?
We primarily care about the quality of the work submitted. We like to know a writer's background, and we celebrate equally finding work to publish from established and emerging writers.
How Are Submissions Processed In Your Magazine/press?
We accept submissions via Submittable. All submissions get the eyes of at least two editors. The finalists for consideration are read aloud and discussed by conference call/meeting by all the editors.
What Do You Look For In A Submission?
Our format requires short work so that writing and art can sing alongside one another. We consider readers "on the streets": would this writing speak to someone who does not usually seek out literature? Strong subject, imagery, craft a must.
What Advice Do You Have For First-time Submitters?
The old chestnut: read some of what we've published.
Do You Have A Favorite Unsolicited Submission Discovery Or Anecdote?
95% of our submissions are unsolicited. We delight in opening our Submittable to find names new to us and names known. Getting an unsolicited submission from Jane Hirshfield was quite an honor.
Who Is Your Ideal Reader?
The curious, alert person at a bus stop whose eye catches one of our broadsides and is drawn in.
