Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
Canned is a literary magazine that seeks comfort in the off-kilter. We relish absurdism, the weird, and the odd. Bring us your jaw-breaking juxtapositions, the snickers summoned up from your lowest lows and your highest highs. We mean to investigate the world, our time, and ourselves through a warped lens. We want the sharp, the clever, the slash-and-burned recognition. We want to meet your silliest personas and your most vulnerable realizations. Invite us to embrace the best things and the worst, with depth a-plenty. Shake out the cobwebs. Make the bed. Pour jam on it. We seek new voices and old, emerging and established. We seek the words of all cultural identities, orientations, and perspectives. Above all, we want writing that calls to the present and the future, the kind that endures past its shelf-life, and that we can preserve and return to, savoring it on a slice of toast come winter.

Submissions Policy
(from Canned's "Submission Guidelines" page on website) Canned seeks submissions of poetry, fiction, and essay. Submissions should be typed and double-spaced with numbered pages. Poetry may, of course, be single-spaced, but please begin each poem on a new page. You may submit up to five (5) pages of poetry, or up to 5,000 words of fiction or essay. Please do not submit more than once per submission cycle. Upon acceptance, Canned requests first serial rights, though all rights revert back to the author upon publication. We will keep any accepted work online in our archives. If the piece is republished, please indicate its initial publication in Canned. At the moment, Canned cannot pay its contributors, though we hope that circumstances change in the future. Please keep previously published work, novel or book-length manuscripts, and materials published on social media or blogs to yourself. Thank you! We are committed to responding to each submission as quickly as possible—that said, please understand that we are a small staff. Feel free to give us a nudge if you haven’t heard from us within three months. We do accept simultaneous submissions; please let us know as soon as your work is accepted elsewhere. Got something (Music? Visual art? Cross-genre work? Ephemera?) that doesn’t quite fit our submission categories? We’d love to talk. Reach out to us at [email protected]
