Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
Founded in 1948, the Carolina Quarterly is the literary journal of the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. It is housed in the Department of English and Comparative Literature. For decades, the Carolina Quarterly has published cutting-edge, high-quality writing and art from emergent and established writers alike. Today, the Carolina Quarterly is pleased to publish exceptional art and writing three times a year in print. In addition to our quarterly print issues, we publish exclusive online content year-round. We believe that exceptional work is always on the brink of discovery, and we want to find it. The Carolina Quarterly seeks work that is authentic, visceral, and sharp. We enjoy wit balanced with genuine heart, vulnerability that isn’t afraid to mirror our own fault-lines back to us, and that which takes notice of the world. We do not publish genre fiction, but we welcome literary works that experiment.
