Beginning as the Carolina Magazine in 1844, it was reimagined in 1948 as The Carolina Quarterly. From 1948 onward, The Carolina Quarterly was dedicated to publishing exceptional writing and art from emerging and established writers. Past contributors include A. R. Ammons, Doris Betts, Raymond Carver, Ha Jin, and Joyce Carol Oates. It was the journal of the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill where it was housed in their Department of English and Comparative Literature. The Carolina Quarterly went on hiatus in 2022 and re-emerged in 2026 as an independent journal, now called simply Carolina Quarterly. This new era of Carolina Quarterly indicates another metamorphosis, but the mission remains the same: to publish exceptional writing and art from emerging and established writers. Today, Carolina Quarterly is pleased to publish once-to-twice a year in print. In addition to our print issues, we publish exclusive online content year-round. We believe that exceptional work is always on the brink of discovery, and we want to find it. Carolina Quarterly seeks work that is authentic, visceral, and sharp. We enjoy wit balanced with genuine heart, vulnerability that isn’t afraid to mirror our own fault-lines back to us, and that which takes notice of the world. We do not publish genre fiction, but we welcome literary works that experiment. Thank you for your continued support.
