Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
The ongoing mission of CHAX is 1) to publish literary editions of challenging and innovative contemporary writing and distribute them to the public, 2) to create unique book arts editions which are generative conjunctions of literature and the book arts, and 3) to present events that further public knowledge about explorations in contemporary writing and the book arts. CHAX is a poet’s press and a poets’ press, i.e. the vision of a poet, and forming a community of poets; and among the various practices and changes over the years, there are some constants. CHAX focuses on a book at a time, each one individual and different, each one a marriage of form/design and literary content. Our letterpress books emerge from intense collaboration between poet and book artist. They show new ways in the art of the book. CHAX also curates readings and other events. Our special publishing projects include one-off and limited-edition broadsides. CHAX maintains a commitment to innovation and experimentation in literature, but the modes of such innovation are not seen narrowly, and within that commitment is also a commitment to diversity of peoples and to acts of collaboration.
