The Cleveland State University Poetry Center, established in 1962 to promote poetry through readings and community outreach, expanded its mission to become a nonprofit independent press in 1971. We currently publishes contemporary poetry, essays, and translations with a national distribution and reach. Recent titles have been awarded the Betty Berzon Emerging Writer Award from the Publishing Triangle, a Firecracker Award from CLMP, the Norma Farber First Book Award from the Poetry Society of America, and a FOREWORD Indies Award. In addition to publishing, the CSU Poetry Center offers literary programming that is both local and national in scale. We host the Lighthouse Reading Series, the NEOMFA Writers at Work Colloquium, and the Anisfield-Wolf Fellowship in Writing and Publishing, a two-year post-graduate fellowship intended to support a writer’s creative work, provide professional mentorship, and address the longstanding lack of diversity in the U.S. publishing workforce. We also regularly collaborate with Cleveland organizations such as LIT Cleveland, Cleveland Review of Books, and Zygote Press to organize local literary events. The CSU Poetry Center is also proud to serve as a teaching lab and educational resource by involving Cleveland State University undergraduates and NEOMFA graduate students in the editorial and production aspects of literary publishing via assistantship and internship opportunities. The students that work with us gain experience in the work of editing, book production, book promotion, and programming, and regularly go on to careers in arts administration, teaching, publishing, and nonprofit work.
