Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
DOPPELHOUSE PRESS is a Los Angeles-based publisher that focuses on memoir, art/architecture, and biographies, often encompassing histories of war, migration, and diaspora. We feature character-driven books that explore the dynamics between sociopolitical forces, cultural or political movements, and aesthetic forms. We began our work in 2011 looking at the developing styles and attitudes within 20th-century Central European modernism, which is intertwined with the perspective of exiles, for many of whom statelessness and belonging to broader artistic movements preceded their physical dislocation. We also publish Holocaust memoirs, books by journalists working in dangerous transitional circumstances, as well as critical essays, speculative fiction, and a new focus on nature, species, and society. Our online magazine, The Nomadic Journal, features essays that delve into the intricate interplay between history, art, and culture. We welcome submissions that resonate with our vision and encompass the rich tapestry of human experiences, including art and cultural criticism, discussions of architecture, interviews, poetry, fiction, and stories from diaspora. We also accept proposals to reprint previously published essays or book excerpts.
