Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
Like a long, deep scar, the Interstate 5 cuts along the entire West Coast, from Vancouver to Mexico. It’s over 2000 miles long. It’s as much a Los Angeles icon as it is a symbol of clutter, traffic, industry, outlet malls, mountains, hills, cow fields, scenic views, long stretches of nothing, and vast plains of green. Five South is an online, biannual, literary journal where storytelling counts. Whether it’s in prose or poem form, we want to get to meat of it. We like stories about people, places, memories, things that make us feel connected. We want heroes and fighters, day drinkers, and poets. We want grit, rock n’ roll, hope, despair, and honesty. People who stand up for what they believe in is our jam. Real people make mistakes. If you like Charles Bukowski and Jimmy Santiago Baca, you’re our best friend. We want all the strong voices that have something to say, but leave your soap box at home. We appreciate nuance. Like the 5 Freeway, we want scenery that varies from strip malls to green pastures. Five South does not discriminate and we’re glad to publish emerging authors of all colors, orientations, affiliations, and designations from all over the world.

Submissions Policy
Five South does not discriminate. We love all people and all people have stories to tell. We want ugly stuff, beautiful stuff. Stuff that has a point and makes you think. A good story makes you feel. A good writer know the difference between obscurity and mystery. While we want to remain an open (safe space) for all writers, we will not publish material that is outright hateful. We’re open to all genres as long as it’s your best work. Submissions are open all year. FEES: Five South is a labor of love and Submittable ain’t cheap. We request a $3.00 submission fee merely to allow us to keep using Submittable and help pay our monthly bills. If you are experiencing financial hardship and would like to waive the fee, please email [email protected]. Writing is for everyone and we’d hate for some great writer to pass on submitting because they can’t manage the fee. READ TIME: We’re writers too and we know the drill. We’ll always do our best to respond in a timely fashion. Following these guidelines makes our job easier… Short Stories and Flash Fiction: 12-point Times New Roman Double-spaced 1” margins Please number your pages Maximum 3,000 words, or 3 flash pieces of maximum 1,000 words each. Occasionally we will accept longer pieces, but please ask first. Poetry Formatting Guidelines: 12-point Times New Roman font Single-spaced (or as you would like your poem to appear online) Please number your pages Maximum 3 poems, no more than 5 pages total
