How Did You Arrive At Your Current Position?
I previously served as Editor at Copper Canyon Press, and currently work as a freelance book editor and manuscript consultant. Generous Press was born of the desire to center joy, love, and equity for queer, BIPOC, and disabled literary communities.
What Is The Staff Structure At Your Magazine/press?
Generous Press is owned and run by myself and Deputy Publisher Amber Flame. This is currently a labor of love (unpaid). We are an imprint of Row House Publishing where we work closely with President Rebekah Borucki and Associate Publisher V. Ruiz.
Do You Have Any Cover Letter Advice?
Having spent more than a decade reading book submissions, my advice is simple: Read and follow submission guidelines. Demonstrate why your work is a good fit. Do not submit unless you know and appreciate the mission of the publisher in question.
How Are Submissions Processed In Your Magazine/press?
We are brand-new and currently a party of two! Your submission will be reviewed on a rolling basis by Generous Press Publisher and Deputy Publisher. We will bring in our Row House colleagues, sensitivity readers, and guest editors as appropriate.
What Do You Look For In A Submission?
Although our focus is on romance—which is classified as "genre fiction"—Generous Press is all about bringing poetry to prose. We want meet cutes and happy endings, but we also want to swoon over metaphor, music, and emotional complexity.
Who Is Your Ideal Reader?
Romance-curious readers feeling shy about picking up the genre. Reformed literary snobs. Longtime citizens of romancelandia wishing for representation of brown, Black, queer, sick, and disabled love stories. Writers. People who read love poems aloud.
