Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
Rowayat publishes stories from Egypt and the world. Connecting creative writing from SWANA to Canada. Like the bennu in our logo, that rises again and flies to new homes, we have chosen to pursue our mission from a new destination. We were founded in Cairo but now we are in Montreal. Our mission is to unravel Egypt’s treasure trove of contemporary literature to the rest of the world. Our vision is to create a space and a home for hybrid writers. Our website features a variety of literary work for all ages in English and French. Our mission is to unravel Egypt’s treasure trove of contemporary literature to the rest of the world. Rowayat seeks writing by both emerging and established writers. Contributors of art, comics, fiction, CNF, poetry and flash fiction do not need to identify as SWANA; we ask that submissions are in dialogue with the SWANA region and its diaspora communities.

Submissions Policy
Rowayat seeks writing by both emerging and established writers. Contributors of art, comics, fiction, CNF, poetry and flash fiction do not need to identify as SWANA; we ask that submissions are in dialogue with the SWANA region and its diaspora communities. Submissions will be accepted from 1. Egyptian writers around the world 3. SWANA writers* 4. Indigenous Peoples of Canada** *SWANA is a decolonial word for the South West Asian/ North African (SWANA) region in place of Middle Eastern, Near Eastern, Arab World or Islamic World that have colonial, Eurocentric, and Orientalist origins created to conflate, contain and dehumanize our people. **Rowayat acknowledges that we are on unceded Indigenous lands of the traditional territory of both the Kanien’kehá:ka, “Mohawk,” and the Anishinabeg, “Algonquin,” Peoples. We acknowledge the communities we live in today were built on land that Indigenous Peoples inhabited long before Canada became a country. We acknowledge the generations of Indigenous People who have suffered and continue to suffer profoundly from complex social problems due to the policies adopted by Canadian governments. We need to actively make space for Indigenous Peoples – therefore, we accept submissions from all Indigenous Peoples of Canada.
