Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
ILS aims to amplify the literary and cultural visibility of Nairobi and Lamu, Kenya within an international context and with a particular focus on showcasing the vibrant and complex voices of emerging East African writers, by providing an intimate and intensive series of literary workshops, career consultations, cultural offerings that foster artistic cooperation, elevate emerging literary talent, and increase mutual understanding across the North American, East African, and international literary communities.

Submissions Policy
We accept applications from anywhere in the world to apply to our program, and to our literary contest (in collaboration with Fence magazine). Program participants and contest winners will be selected based on the quality of their manuscripts. All submissions are read blind. For the contest, finalist will be selected by ILS staff, and the winners will be selected by the editors of Fence magazine. Publication and a full fellowship to one international writer will be awarded, with runners up getting partial fellowships and the opportunity for publication as well. Further details and info on how to apply will be announced in summer 2022.
