Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
Lampblack is committed to the advancement of Black literature through direct aid, programs for writers and readers of Black literature, and a publication dedicated to voices from the Black diaspora. The lack of resources in our communities and the erasure of our work from classrooms affect each and every one of us before we put words on a page. Institutions designed to ameliorate this condition fail to provide adequate support; their efforts come too late and often exploit our labor. Lampblack was created to provide relief for Black writers and expand the reach of our work because critical engagement with our culture is a radical act.

Submissions Policy
Three of the authors will be selected from a pool of established writers compiled by Lampblack. The other three writers will be selected from submissions. We will also read the work of applicants who have also applied to our direct aid program. In this way, we hope to amplify black voices that have helped to shape our vision, while offering a platform for the black writers and thinkers of the present and future.
