Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
Themes throughout: pain. We’re in the business of publishing work that speaks to the stuff. Mental pain is often contrary to its recipient and feels alien when classifying. You’re placing something as lucid and well-mannered as a label on a beast. Genus: unknown yet, Diet: peace of mind The ability to face daybreak with some sampling of delight you found in the wastebasket at work? If mental diseases were perfume samples, there’d be a small grave of them in the bottom of my purse. Torn open and used despite the yellow liquid’s sting on my wrist. Pronouncing pain outwardly is what the lonely geniuses have always done and continue to do, renouncing suffering. For a minute or a month, the suffering is silent and the silence is where heroism's born. We’re heroes for waking up in the morning and finding the courage for a cup of coffee, for locating the pen of laptop charger and facing ourselves. Maybe we’re the panic attack of lit mags, but we’re really here to publish nonfiction about the brain and psychic trauma. There is a tender geometry to writing around trauma, and despite our advanced decade, stigma’s any writer’s gamble when cutting irregularities of flesh for the page. The brain feels scary to contemplate. Writing neurodivergence or personal taboo for the public can be killer. We want to pay for space for writers to do so safely, while paying them well enough that any hate-speech encountered feels a little less threatening. Thank you for being here.
