Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
Los Galesburg was founded in 2019 as a press devoted to the novella, to the in-between, to a form that asks a part to be a whole. Stephen King once called the novella "an ill-defined and disreputable banana republic," and, in that spirit, Los Galesburg seeks to celebrate anecdotal and irreverent voices, as well as digressive and innovative narrative forms. To say it another way, we’re traditional, and we hope to pay homage to the romans tradition out of which the novella emerged. Boccaccio’s Decameron or The Heptameron by Marguerite de Navarre, works that came centuries before what we call the novel, are as important to us as Hawthorne’s or Melville’s novellas, those of Conrad or Camus, and we are also excited by the formally and structurally imaginative contemporary versions of the form found in Ottessa Moshfegh’s McGlue or We the Animals by Justin Torres. Send us the unshapely and the distilled, the concise and the capacious.
