Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
Majuscule’s mission is to publish serious creative nonfiction essays on a variety of topics that would not otherwise be published in a climate where journals and magazines are forced to compete for clicks and page views. Majuscule accepts the premise that good writing sometimes can only be supported through a patronage model, and sees this as a strength and a liberating factor. Majuscule is free to publish works of unusual character, interest, or style regardless of their potential appeal to a broad or commercial audience. Majuscule’s operational mission at present and for the foreseeable future is a tri-quarterly publication each of issue of which contains four substantial creative nonfiction essays on elements of culture and literature, as well as three to four letters from correspondents abroad and in the United States.

Submissions Policy
Open. Majuscule seeks essays on literature, pop culture, sociology, education, film, music, and politics. Our essays run from 3000 to 5000+ words. They are meant to be: 1) self-contained, meaning that they do not rely on the readers having a prior understanding of any given topic; 2) textual, meaning they do not include illustrations or artwork, nor do they feature hyperlinks; 3) evergreen, meaning that while they address aspects of contemporary life, they are not tied to any specific news cycle or event. These guidelines thus preclude: reviews of specific books, films, or performances; academic essays; anything requiring visual elements or illustrations; fiction and poetry; political hot takes; and any highly topical subject that will quickly “date.” Please read some of the essays from our previous issues before submitting. Please send your pitch to [email protected] with an attachment that includes a two-paragraph pitch, some information about you and your background, and links to any recent writing that you have published.
