Submissions Policy
Submissions open January 1st through April 30th for September print and electronic publication. We aim to have a determination within three weeks of your date of submission. However, submissions for cover art will not be decided on until after submissions close. REQUIREMENTS Previously unpublished works only. Simultaneous and multiple submissions are allowed. However, submitters must notify our editors immediately if their work is accepted by another publication. All submissions should be made through Submittable. We try to read our submissions blind, so do not include your contact information or bio in your attachment(s). Contact information and a short bio (80 words or fewer) must be included in the designated Submittable fields. SUBMISSION FEES There are no fees for visual art submissions Electronic submissions of poetry and prose submissions require a fee of $3 per attachment. There are no submission fees for poetry or prose sent via USPS. However, a cover letter that includes the submitters' bio, and valid email address must be provided. If the author does not use email, we ask that an SASE also be included. Each attachment may include up to two (2) pieces of either poetry, prose, or one (1) of each with a maximum of five (5) pages per attachment. All submitters will receive a link to an electronic copy of Making Waves. Submission fees help pay for our subscription to an electronic submissions manager. Any additional funds collected are used to fund scholarships, workshops, and other community events to promote creative writing. RIGHTS Submitters grant First Rights to publish to Making Waves. We may reprint accepted work on our website and/or social media accounts, LudingtonWriters.org. Otherwise, all rights revert to the author upon publications. FORMATS Poetry and prose must be .doc, .docx, or .pdf files. All poetry or prose must use 12-point font type (unless a font change serves the intent of the piece) with one-inch margins. Titles should be formatted in all caps unless the author has a different preference. Our font preferences are Times New Roman, Helvetica, or Arial. POETRY We consider poetry of any style. Each submission is limited to no more than two (2) pieces with a maximum of five (5) pages total. Please keep in mind that space limitations allow for no more than 60 characters per line and 30 lines per page. Poetry submissions should be print ready, that means single or double-spaced and aligned as required by the form chosen by the author. PROSE Each set of submissions is limited to no more than two (2) pieces of stand-alone fiction or non-fiction of 1,000 words or less. Prose should be double spaced. VISUAL ART Submissions should be tiff, jpeg, or jpg files, at least 300 dpi, and may be of any medium as long as they evoke feelings and convey meaning. Keep in mind that our layout is a 6x9 portrait page. We are asking for no more than four (4) black and white submissions and no more than two (2) color images be submitted per person. Black and white submissions must be pre-formatted for the page (do not submit color images for the black and white interior).
