Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
MASKS Literary Magazine is published in partnership with the Columbia College Chicago Library and the Aesthetics of Research Program: an ongoing series of exhibits and events dedicated to exploring the role that libraries play in the artistic process, creative community building, and resource-sharing in the arts. MASKS Literary Magazine focuses on supporting emerging writers and artists. We provide a meritocratic space in which new writers can build their portfolios, find their audience, engage in a professional editorial process, and get their work out into the world. While we have no restrictions on the writers or content published beyond our issue's theme, we’re passionate about publishing new writers, new artists, and new perspectives. As such, we've pledged to increase representation of the BIPOC, LGBTQ+, female and female identifying, disabled, multilingual, and other marginalized and underrepresented communities, because the publishing world needs diversity. We support and join the movement that is making that happen.

MASKS Literary Magazine supports emerging writers and artists. We accept unsolicited and multiple submissions in art, photography, fiction, flash fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and hybrid genres. We’re passionate about publishing new writers, new artists, and new perspectives. We welcome work from BIPOC, LGBTQ+, female and female identifying, disabled, multilingual, and other marginalized and underrepresented voices, so feel free to indicate in your cover letter if you belong to an underrepresented group. We charge no submission fees and, in order to reduce wait time, try to respond to submissions within 4-6 weeks. We accept poetry submissions of 3-5 poems (no more than 10 pages total) in a single document. Our typical word count for prose submissions is a maximum of 3,000 words, be it fiction, flash fiction, essay, reportage, or a hybrid genre. For art and photography, we accept submissions of 3-10 images, preferably united by a common theme or style; an artist's statement is optional but welcome. We ask for First North American Serial Rights (i.e., to be the first publication in North America to publish it), after which all rights return to the creator.
Accepts Unsolicited Submissions
