Poets Reading the News is a vibrant digital platform and event series based in Oakland, California, that bridges poetry and current events. Our mission is to enact poetry’s vital cultural function as a processor for violence, cultural complexity, and political change. Founded in 2016, we have since published breaking poetry by hundreds of writers from over 25 countries and redefined the pace and scope of poetry for the digital age. Poets Reading the News, founded in 2016, publishes original poetry about current events from around the world. Please follow our social media platforms to stay updated on our calls for poetry. • We accept only original and previously unpublished works, up to three (3) poems per submission. You may have one submission under review at a time. • Simultaneous submissions are encouraged. If your writing is accepted elsewhere, please notify us as soon as possible. • When possible, include news sources to support your submission and provide sources for any data or quotes. • Poets Reading the News encourages writers of all backgrounds to submit their writing, including writers of color, women writers, emergent writers, LGBTQI+ writers, and writers from regions near and far. We recognize that participation in poetry and journalism can come with significant barriers, including financial, institutional, and historical barriers, and we as an organization have a responsibility to do all we can do to break down those barriers. By submitting your work, you are assuring that you hold the rights to the work and you are granting Poets Reading the News the rights to publish it if accepted. Please note this is a non-paying publishing market. Works may be selected to appear on Poets Reading the News social media platforms, newsletter, and/or radio features. We will assume a general interest in our publication attends to your submission and add you to our newsletter.
