Mission Statement / Editorial Focus
Quarter After Eight is an annual, graduate-student run literary journal devoted to the exploration of innovative writing. We publish work that surprises, mesmerizes, and captivates, while also challenging conventions and eschewing safe choices. We are especially interested in publishing writers from underrepresented groups. QAE publishes fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, cross-genre work, and visual art. QAE was chartered as a student organization in May 1994 by a small volunteer staff of English graduate students at Ohio University who conceived of and published the first issue, and the journal’s name commemorates the start time of the founder’s first official meeting. This forum they created for conversations about experimental writing remains one of the only of its kind in the nation. Over the past twenty-eight years the journal has published Dani Putney, David Shields, Negesti Kaudo, Mary Ruefle, Tobias Wolff, Robin Hemley, Maureen Seaton, Denise Duhamel, Ander Monson, Michael Martone, Aimee Parkison, Brenda Miller, and Oliver De La Paz. Our contributors have been nominated for Pushcart Prizes and reprinted in anthologies, including the Best American series.
