How Did You Arrive At Your Current Position?
We arrived at publishing via multiple channels: a printing apprenticeship in 2010, and Occupy Wall Street.
What Is The Staff Structure At Your Magazine/press?
We are a worker-owned shop, which means that there is no hierarchy, and that we make decisions collectively and share in both the risks and the benefits of running a small business. We are also unionized.
Do You Have Any Cover Letter Advice?
Show that you have researched us and know what we're about. We love hearing from writers and artists, especially those from typically marginalized or ignored communities. Be honest and show heart.
How Are Submissions Processed In Your Magazine/press?
All workers read all submissions and decide collectively what to pursue for publication.
What Do You Look For In A Submission?
We look for stories that get to the root of the human experience, whether it's a short genre piece about the perils of humanity or an essay on the loss of a loved one or a photo project that explores gentrification.
What Advice Do You Have For First-time Submitters?
Follow our submission guidelines to the letter. Also know that we are unable to respond to every single person who submits, due to the volume of submissions. Please don't take it personally if you don't hear back from us.
Who Is Your Ideal Reader?
Someone who will cherish not just the content of the book, but also the physical presence. Smell the ink, run your fingers over the cover, take it somewhere quiet, and enjoy.
